2017 School Library Month
General Assembly Email Template

Dear <Representative / Senator>:

In celebration of School Library Month, I am writing to ask your support in helping Rhode Island students succeed.

For the third year in a row, Governor Gina Raimondo has proclaimed April as School Library Month here in Rhode Island. The first School Library Month was launched in 1985 by the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) with the theme “Where Learning Never Ends - The School Library Media Center.” Since that time, school libraries have evolved into centers that not only encourage a love of reading, but also provide students access to real-time information and new technologies.

School librarians play an imperative role in helping students become lifelong learners. They now also teach students to evaluate sources, recognize fake news, and use information ethically and responsibly, while supporting the Governor’s CS4RI initiative.

Libraries may have changed throughout the years; however, their mission and purpose have remained the same. AASL’s School Library Month theme for 2017 is “Because School Libraries Empower Students,” as it perfectly reflects the impact that school libraries have on young learners in this ever-changing digital age.

As a school librarian and your constituent, I ask that you please keep in mind the value of school library programs in empowering students. Your support in helping school libraries stay funded, staffed, and running is greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Respectfully,
